The most famous breakfast snack in Malta is pastizzi – traditional pastries filled with ricotta or mushy peas. You’ll find them on every corner in characteristic “pastizzerias“. They’re usually eaten standing up with a cup of coffee, just like Italians with their cornetto!

COFFEE IN MALTA

Coffee culture is a blend of British and Italian influences:

  • Tea with milk: British influence, very popular

So many places take your cup away and you’re left with nothing in front of you and they keep asking if you want anything…

Here are my favorite places for breakfast and brunch in Malta for 2025:

Breakfast In Valletta:

  • Tribe: Modern space with exceptional food. Famous for its avocado toast and specialty coffees. The only downside is that it’s hard to get a spot without a reservation!
  • Elephant Shoe: Located in a traditional building, offering excellent service and outstanding food.
  • Manouche: French influences and quite classic. Their croissants are a must-try.

Breakfast in Sliema:

  • Word of Mouth: The area’s favorite spot with generous portions and wonderful smoothie bowls.
  • Monastic: Located on the first floor of a hotel with sea views
  • Laduree: French elegance and their famous macarons, located in the shopping center plaza

Breakfast in St. Julians:

  • 2 Buoys: Seaside spot with beautiful views and favorite egg breakfast dishes.
  • Brunch & Beyond: All-day brunch with international dishes in a modern setting.

In surrounding areas:

Java (Naxxar): They don’t take reservations but their brunch is excellent and affordable

Felice (Gzira): Large restaurant in Malta right on the seafront

Newport (Ta’ Xbiex): Small but excellent for takeaway coffee.

Tip: Reservations are recommended for most of these places, especially on weekends.
